Sheila Harsdorf already has had “state senator” and “state representative” in front of her name. Now the Republican from River Falls wants to try “lieutenant governor” on for size.

Harsdorf, who is in her second term in the state Senate, says she is considering running for the state’s No. 2 job in 2006.

“I’m thinking about it. I haven’t ruled it out yet,” Harsdorf said Friday. “What I’m doing is basically looking at the pros and the cons and where and how I can make an impact.”

Harsdorf, 48, was elected in 2000 to represent the 10th Senate District, which includes parts of Dunn, St. Croix, Pierce, Polk and Burnett counties. She also served in the state Assembly between 1989 and 1999.

U.S. Rep. Mark Green of Green Bay and Milwaukee County Executive Scott Walker likely will vie for the Republican nomination for governor in 2006. Harsdorf served with both men in the state Assembly and praised them as “outstanding” public servants.

Harsdorf said Republican Party insiders asked her to consider running for lieutenant governor. She said her western Wisconsin roots are one of the reasons they approached her. Green and Walker are both from the eastern side of the state.

“It’s important in a position like this that issues from different parts of the state are acknowledged and addressed,” she said.

“We really do need the western voice to come up, and Sheila’s candidacy would do that,” said Dennis Shaw, chairman of the 3rd Congressional District Republican Party.

At a GOP caucus meeting in Menomonie last weekend, Shaw introduced Harsdorf as a potential candidate for lieutenant governor.

“The whole place, nearly 100 people, stood up and gave her a standing ovation,” Shaw said. “She would have a lot of support if she decides to run.”

In the immediate future, Harsdorf said she’s focusing on her work in the state Senate, which includes the 2005-07 state budget and a bill she has sponsored to fight methamphetamine.

Harsdorf said she might make up her mind after the budget is finished. The budget is supposed to be passed by June, but is often delayed.

“I have been thinking about it, and obviously I have not made any announcements,” she said. “It’s just one of the things that can happen.”
